Jeff Jones has got That Wanderlust
I have been looking forward to this moment so much! It’s time to share stories of my travel friends. Those I met along the road.
Today Jeff Jones kicks it off by answering a couple of questions I’ve been dying to ask him! He’s my beloved travel friend from the States. Jeff is a surf addict, loves to get on the plane for any new travel adventure and he’s definitely a whole lot of fun!
Dear mister Jones! Everyone could guess that we met while traveling. Do you remember that day?
Jeff:
Of course I do! We met in the swimming pool at The Bigfoot Beach House in Las Peñitas, Nicaragua… For some reason we were just dying to chat with each other <3 This was just the beginning of my adventure! I came to Nicaragua for a four-day surf trip, but told my friends to drop me off in Leon, I just wasn’t ready to go home yet…”
You are great with bottles and cocktails! What’s the story behind all that?
Jeff:
I have been bartending for over ten years, partying is a passion of mine and I was inspired by the alcohol side I guess. Plus I have been competing as a flair bartender for about seven years and it has really helped my finances. Bartenders get an unbelievable amount of respect and it is a great way to make quick cash!”
I also know that you are a fabulous entertainer… Have you always been like this?
Jeff:
Yes… My dad was a Rockstar and my mom a Dancer so I turned into a Party Host. I have an accidental addiction to trying to steal the spotlight. It just kinda happens. The feeling you get by making someone else excited is irreplaceable.”
What do you like about traveling and when did the travel bug bit you?
Jeff:
Honestly my first trip to Costa Rica on my 21st Bday blew my mind. I came home after a week, sold my car, cleaned out my savings, worked 20 days straight and moved to Playa Hermosa in Costa Rica for 6 months…”
Wow, sounds awesome!
How did you fund your travels at the begin? And what about currently?
Jeff:
Well, like we talked about earlier, I would say bartending was my first big cash cow. However, I eventually opened a mobile bartending business called The Pour Doctors and have been catering amazing events ever since. I now have a large staff and residual business, so I am able to staff my events from the road and make cash while traveling.”
In Nicaragua you told me you want to surf every day. Is that still happening?
Jeff:
I surfed pretty much every single day I was in Nicaragua. That day trip by the way turned into about 5 months! Living in San Juan it was hard to get to surf on Sundays due to Sunday Funday but being the surf instructor for The Naked Tiger Hostel kept me in the water every day. I am actually wearing my Surf Everyday Hat I got in Leon about the time I met You!
And here are some of my recommended surf beaches for surf travelers in Nicaragua who may read this:
- “The Boom” in Northern Nica,
- Puerto Sandino,
- Mirimar,
- Playa Maderas. Those are some of the must Surf spots before you leave this amazing country!
Great advise Jeff! Thanks!
Are you single Jeff? Or did some traveler stole your heart?
Jeff:
Of course I am still single. What girl in her right mind wants to date a guy that buys a plane ticket every chance he gets! Though I met a ton of amazing souls on my last journey that I will remember for a lifetime, there was a time on this trip where my heart was close to stolen. But some things just aren’t meant to be. My true love is adventure and traveling and Nicaragua has truly earned that place in my heart that I am not sure if a woman can replace.”
So… which great travel memory comes up in your head right now?
Jeff:
Well being inside a Volcano on Ometepe was truly one of the most surreal places I have ever came across. But the 4+ hour hike was nearly the death of me. After meeting you, if you recall, there was multiple days of intense drinking that really took a number on me. Trying to hike while sweating out a week of beers and body shots was literally the worst day of my life but at the same time the greatest… Oh, and us learning how to walk the tight rope!! Look at the finger!!”
Who was the most inspiring person you met while on the road?
Jeff:
Well to be honest you… You were all alone, traveling through the Americas, while making awesome friends and blogging about it the whole way. As our paths split I was able to follow you as you kept hitting new locations and awesome places that truly made me jealous. And I never get jealous! Our chats truly inspired me to get more out of traveling and I can’t wait till our paths cross again for the next adventure!”
Thank you love! I believe I’m actually blushing!
Do you have an adventurous travel anecdote you’d like to share?
Jeff:
Those who Move Slowly go Nowhere Fast.”
Any travel advise you wish someone had told you before?
Jeff:
Every where you go in the world you can get yourself into trouble. Just remember that your parents aren’t around to bail you out, so keep your cool, you are not at home. And WHATEVER you do DON’T punch a DJ, they have more friends than you do…”
Let’s all stay out of trouble and be nice 🙂
Wish to follow Jeff on his next adventure? He blogs about it these days! Click right here for his awesome page. His next adventure will lead him to Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Brazil.
About Renate Rigters
Ever since I left my home country I felt at home at any other place I went to. I enjoy getting to know more cultures by talking to strangers and hearing their philosophy about life. Speaking with gestures when you can not find a shared language, finding places only the locals go to and learn about their customs and values. Hanging out with local people makes me happy. The experience of every new place is a step out of your comfort zone where I like to wander around until it feels like a second home.
