A Surf Journal: Fuerte’s Playa del Moro
It’s Tuesday morning and I got the chance to wake up without my alarm clock set today. Eventually I wake up at about 8am and go straight for breakfast. Two Austrian girls, Kathi and Elisabeth, who are also at the surf house, wake up at around the same time and we decide to hit to streets together after we eat our cereals. One of the girls rented a surf-skate board and it’s super fun to see how this kind of skateboarding works. It looks like a kind of surfing on the street, but on a smaller board. I give it a try and actually it’s a whole lot easier than I thought. I enjoy kicking the street with my right foot and steering with it while on the board.
As we are walking and surf-skating through the streets of Corralejo we turn on the relax mode again. We have to be back at the surf house in the afternoon for our surf session, but we’ve got loads of time to check out some of the surf shops and get a local coffee.
The first cool surf shop we run into is called the No Work Team and it has highly pulled my attention with its name. I still had to buy a pull-over or a sweater since I hadn’t really brought enough warm clothes with me for the winter season here at Fuerteventura. I decided to check out this shop for something warm. Luckily I found a cool hoodie with the following text on the back:
No Work Team Surf Area Fuerteventura – Do not even think about work – It’s time to relax.
This totally fits the spirit of the week!
Tres cappuccinos por favor!”
We’re all pretty much done with the shops within one hour and want to go back to the ocean. We walk into Corralejo old town until we reach the harbor and walk passed the cute little bars and restaurants on the beach side. We find this one lovely bar where they serve coffee with a nice view on the ocean. Guapo, we would love Tres cappuccinos por favor!
When we walk back to the surf house we buy some lunch and prepare an easy meal before we head out to the beach for our surf session. When it’s about three in the afternoon we put on our wetsuits, bring the surfboards to the van and start driving with our surf instructor Marco to one of the beaches where he already checked the surfing conditions. Today we’re going to Playa del Moro, which seems to be a very popular surf beach as we arrive to the crowded parking area. It’s a nice beach, basically all sandy and there’s just a bit of wind today.
It’s only the second day and I have to practice my take off again since it’s been a while that I actually stood on a board. Last time was June I guess. Surfing is something you have to keep up with. It’s not like riding a bicycle. However, after a few waves I get the feeling back and things seem to work out well. Some of the people who went surfing in the morning also showed up at Playa Del Moro and one person joined us again. This person had to be our German friend Sebastian, who just could’t get enough of the waves, ever. A true Sebastian the crab! We try to do some tandem surfing with Sebastian and Marco, but the waves get a little lazy as the day is reaching sunset. Time to go back to the surf home.
Tomorrow let’s try catch some green waves!
About Renate Rigters
Ever since I left my home country I felt at home at any other place I went to. I enjoy getting to know more cultures by talking to strangers and hearing their philosophy about life. Speaking with gestures when you can not find a shared language, finding places only the locals go to and learn about their customs and values. Hanging out with local people makes me happy. The experience of every new place is a step out of your comfort zone where I like to wander around until it feels like a second home.
