Nostalgic airplanes and my lost backpack

me_plane_buenosAires

Is it a plane, is it a bird or is it Superman? Finally, the delayed flight to London Heathrow arrives at Dusseldorf and I board the airplane for this short journey to London. I have to spend the night at Heathrow, because my first flight had a delay of at least three hours due to bad weather conditions. The lady from the connecting flights desk puts me on the first flight to Madrid leaving in the morning and from there of I’ll have to catch my third flight which will finally bring me to Buenos Aires.

Delayed flight room service

sofitel sofitel_roomservice I have got a room at the Sofitel hotel at London Heathrow airport so that I can catch my flight early in the morning without having to get to the airport first again. The receptionist at the hotel provides me with a room service delayed flight menu because the restaurant has already closed. I’ve arrived late in London so this will be a late night diner in my room. I order some fish and chips and a soup from my room telephone and 40 minutes later a young man knocks on my door holding a big nice smelling tray. “Where would you like me to leave the tray madam?” he asks me. I tell him to leave it a the bed since I’ll eat and fall a sleep quickly afterwords anyway. Unfortunately I have no cash on me, so no tip. Sorry!

I am not a early morning person

At 05:28 in the morning I wake up right before my alarm. It always happens to me that I wake up a few minutes before my phone will annoy me with the irritating alarm sound when I have to wake up on time for a flight. Lucky me. I am not amused when I have to wake up early, so with the possibility of oversleeping when I have to catch a flight I’ll always sleep a bit nervously and wake up way before I should. No bad morning humor, but i just really like sleeping… Anyway, waking up on time to go to Argentina is worth it! Everything goes well on time and I am happy when I reach Madrid at 11:30 in the morning. Now I have to run to my connecting flight!

Nostalgic airplanes

Iberia_madrid_nostalgic I’ve seem a lot of airplanes, but this one seems to be the most, let’s call it “authentic” one. Perhaps I could also call it nostalgic. It is a big airplane that has to cross the Atlantic ocean and makes a lot of miles, but this plane still has the old original tv hanging from the ceiling somehow. It’s not the first time I make a long haul flight and step into an old airplane. Last year I flew to Mexico from The Netherlands and I noticed the same entertainment system as today. Not that I am upset that I don’t get my own tv-screen, but it’s funny to me that there is such a big difference between the airlines and their comfort, entertainment and even food and drinks. iberia_airplane_food Whenever I fly with an American airline I notice a lot of booze on the drinks tray, and for example on a European airline I notice a lot of sandwiches instead of hot meals. Also, I must say I really love those hot meals during the flights. “Pasta or chicken?” the stewardess asks. Yummy! I don’t know why or how, but for some reason (maybe it’s the taste fade) I always enjoy those microwave airplane meals to the limit.

Almost there

Probably flying above Brazil, but it looks like the moon

As I look out of my airplane window I am seeing some kind of lunar landscape. Where the hell am I? I look into the airline magazine and search for the map. I guess where flying above Brazil right now and I even think I can see the Amazon. Amazing…

Is it the Amazon?

Let the adventure begin

As I arrive at the airport of Buenos Aires I feel the hot fan of the Latin American weather and it amazes me that so many people put on their jackets. Must have been locals, because I start taking of clothes instead of putting things on! At the luggage carrousel I wait for my The North Face backpack to show up, but it seems like it is going to be the last piece of luggage they remove from the airplane. Or maybe it did not come along at all? Could it be that due to my new connecting flights and the delay my backpack was left somewhere? After having waited for over an hour I start to get worried and ask the security man if there is more luggage to be brought. He tells me there isn’t. Oh noooo… not this again! I give the lady at the lost luggage desk my details and realize I’ll have to do the next day with the same clothes I’ve been wearing already the last two days. Well, I’ll call the airline again in the morning for a status update and in the mean time I’ll just enjoy Buenos Aires in my warm jeans and be happy anyway πŸ™‚

About Renate Rigters

Ever since I left my home country I felt at home at any other place I went to. I enjoy getting to know more cultures by talking to strangers and hearing their philosophy about life. Speaking with gestures when you can not find a shared language, finding places only the locals go to and learn about their customs and values. Hanging out with local people makes me happy. The experience of every new place is a step out of your comfort zone where I like to wander around until it feels like a second home.

[…] also love the feeling an airplane gives me when it takes of from the ground and I feel myself being pushed into my seat. It makes me relax so much! Then I also must admit I love a road-trip, but a train works perfectly […]
