I just arrived to Chile and guess what, it’s actually quite cold over here. From El Calafate, Argentina I took the bus which cost me 200 pesos. After a six-hour drive I arrived at Puerto Natales, which is one of the most Southern places you can go to.

Ever tried some local dried fish in Puerto Natales?

The fjords of Patagonia

So now that I’m at the end of the world, seriously I am, what should I do? I have been kind of planning for over the last week or two to get on the Navimag ferry to Puerto Montt, but as I arrived this afternoon at the port and asked for the price of the ticket the guy told me that there are no more beds available on the boat. “Can’t I just camp on the boat then” I asked, where of course the answer was NO. I will check with the company tomorrow morning again, because you never know if someone doesn’t show up! Fingers crossed. I wish I get to go on this trip and stare at the beautiful fjords of Chile while I’m at it.

The dragon’s backbone

What if everybody shows up tomorrow and there is no more space for me on the boat? Well, then there’s always a plan B!
As I have been getting this recommendation from many people it’s almost or well it actually is a must to do the “W”. The W stands for the shape of the hiking route through Chile’s Parque Nacional Torres del Paine. They say the mountains of Torres del Paine look like the backbone of a dragon and that it’s simply one of the most amazing natural places to sea on this earth. It also seems to be the 8th wonder of the world.

If I’m going to do this hike, it will take me up to four days, or maybe even five, before I’ll be back again. I would need to arrange a tent, some cooking gear and buy food.

Seen in Puerto Natales. Via de evacuacion tsunami?!?!

Today I’ve been walking around in Puerto Natales, trying to figure out what else there is to do in this tiny town. Some canoeing next to the glaciars seems to be an option too and that sounds amazing. But, I’ll think about those other activities only after getting ditched at the ferry terminal tomorrow.

About Renate Rigters

Ever since I left my home country I felt at home at any other place I went to. I enjoy getting to know more cultures by talking to strangers and hearing their philosophy about life. Speaking with gestures when you can not find a shared language, finding places only the locals go to and learn about their customs and values. Hanging out with local people makes me happy. The experience of every new place is a step out of your comfort zone where I like to wander around until it feels like a second home.
