Camping on the West Coast of Sweden.

The beach of Siviks Camping in Lysekil.

A car drive of at least 7 hours from Kalmar to Lysekil brings us to the West coast of Sweden. The Siviks camping is going to be our home-away-from-home for the next four days. Placing the caravan and putting up the tent is the first item on our to-do list, followed by drinking an ice cold beer in the Swedish sun. Today will be sunny, cozy and warm!

Lysekil

We get to spend our first day on the warm rock formations by the sea. Siviks camping has a sandy beach, but also beautiful rock formations that you can easily walk onto. Over there we find a cozy spot to lay down. Even though some also bring their own beach chair, I believe the rock formations are comfy enough to lay against with a towel.

There is a private bridge for boat owners where kids are fishing for crabs. Also some typical Swedish red houses that seem to be used by the boat owners for storing their fishing gear. One person is using it as a changing room and I somehow noticed that…

warm Sweden

From the rocks we walk into the water and take a dip. The water is warm enough. I’d say it’s about 21 degrees Celsius. Pretty good for a Swedish summer, don’t you think? It must be one of the first summers in many years that offers such good hot weather in Sweden.

The visibility of the water totally amazes me. I’m used to the somewhat murky water on the East side of Sweden and yet over here it looks like you can see meters down. If only the water would be so deep – the swimming area only has like one meter of depth. If I have the energy – but I’m too lazy on my holiday – I could swim out and find some more depth for sure.

Rock carvings in Tanum

The next day the weather lets us down a bit as it isn’t that sunny anymore. No worries! We’ve got some exploring of the West Coast to do! We take the car up North towards Fjällbacka, but we go for Tanum first.

At Tanum there are some amazing rock carvings of the viking era and with a touch of red paint by the local museum they are now very visible. Have a look around the area of Tanum. The signs are easily found on the road pointing to the rock carving areas.

Fjällbacka

We take a look at some of the rock carvings in Tanum and continue our road-trip to Fjällbacka. Fjällbacka is a very cozy harbor village which has a well-known name due to crime novels. The author, Camilla Läckberg, wrote the crime novels set in her home town of Fjällbacka.

In the middle of the village we find restaurants full with people sitting on the terrace. Sandwiches with salty shrimps and cooling drinks are served in the entire village. Of course, one of these shrimp sandwiches is mine. And don’t forget about the beer!

It’s lovely to just walk around with the camera and spot interesting decorations on the houses like shark images and of course the year when a house was build. Fjällbacka is definitely one of the best towns to walk through and take pictures.

Smögen

After some walking around, taking pictures of Fjällbacka it’s time to continue our road trip and head to our next stop; Smögen.

If there is one harbor with many boats, then it’s Smögen. I have never seen so many yachts all together. It’s packed with beautiful yachts where people seem to be spending their holidays docked in Smögen.

Smögen is also good for shopping, especially for sailor fashion. The restaurants and bars are cozy and I have to admit that we enjoy the massive candy store in the center of town.

About Renate Rigters

Ever since I left my home country I felt at home at any other place I went to. I enjoy getting to know more cultures by talking to strangers and hearing their philosophy about life. Speaking with gestures when you can not find a shared language, finding places only the locals go to and learn about their customs and values. Hanging out with local people makes me happy. The experience of every new place is a step out of your comfort zone where I like to wander around until it feels like a second home.
