Most sublime indulgence at the Tabacón Thermal Springs
I’m in Costa Rica and after a busy and especially adventurous day in Arenal some relaxing would do me really good. Thanks to mother nature Arenal has amazing hot springs! I went for a visit to the volcanic hot springs of Tabacón
Chilling out
Luckily I discovered this amazing Spa resort named Tabacón, where you can relax in the middle of the Costa Rican jungle and at the same time have the comfort of a hotel resort.
Since I was on a exiting rafting trip in the morning I was looking forward to the relaxed visit to Tabacón Grand Spa Thermal Resort in the afternoon. I did not know what was awaiting me, since I had never seen a resort before where natural hot springs can be found on the property.
Once I arrived I got to see the luxurious hotel, which has truly amazing rooms I would like to spend a night at some day *hint-hint*…
Have a look:
Ready to explore
But okay, let’s get back to the hot springs.
The hot springs are located at a two-minute drive away from the actual hotel. I arrived at the other property with the provided Tabacón shuttle transport and at the entrance I received a towel, locker key (you have to leave a credit card deposit just in case you loose the key and towel) and got a ticket for the dinner at their restaurant. I only had to say at what time I would like to go for dinner and then all was arranged.
I left my things in the locker and left the changing rooms just wearing my bikini, bringing my GoPro so that I could show you my experience (see the video below), the locker key attached to a bracelet and holding a towel in my hand.
The resort is huge! I could walk around and step into a new hot spring every minute if I wanted to. Of course I didn’t do that, because it was too nice to just hang out in one of the in-river pools for a couple of minutes before leaving for the next one. The thermal river runs through the entire resort and the river emerges directly from the Arenal Volcano. The river provides in-river pools, ponds and cascades with beautiful natural surroundings and a great hot temperature that calmed me down after all the traveling I’d done. There is also a water slide, a pool-bar and a shallow swimming pool for kiddies.
“It’s as if the blood leaves my veins when I’m sitting inside the hot springs, but once I step out I feel loads of energy!” one of the guests I ran into tells me.
She was right. The hot water of the springs gives the feeling its power controls you, but afterwards it is an extreme energy boost once you walk around or enter the cold pool.
To be quite frank, I still find it difficult to sit still for a while at a Spa or even in beautiful hot springs since I am a really active, kinda restless person. However, the great surroundings with the comfort of the resort and the mystical vibe allowed myself to get indulged at the thermal springs for over an hour. I can imagine that persons who enjoy a visit to the Spa more often can hang around for a couple of hours though.

About Renate Rigters
Ever since I left my home country I felt at home at any other place I went to. I enjoy getting to know more cultures by talking to strangers and hearing their philosophy about life. Speaking with gestures when you can not find a shared language, finding places only the locals go to and learn about their customs and values. Hanging out with local people makes me happy. The experience of every new place is a step out of your comfort zone where I like to wander around until it feels like a second home.
