Sharks have a really big problem with their popularity. He has the face of a serial killer, a disgusted look because of his crooked teeth, and a manic gluttony that comes along with the necessary bloodshed – no wonder he is not that much of a beloved animal.

Actually harks, such as reef sharks, take care of a healthy ecosystem. They are on top of the food chain and make sure that the populations of other carnivores do not get too big – that way the population of herbivores remains stable.
All seacreatures, from snapper to sponge, benefit from their existence.

The oceanic whitetip shark, of which the pectoral fins are being used a lot for soup, is seriously threatened in many areas.

Sharks bite people less often than people bite each other. However, it is still difficult to raise public support and fonds.

I wanted to give a little shout out for these kings of the sea. I want to raise awareness of dwindling shark populations and the issues associated with overfishing and shark finning.

About Renate Rigters

Ever since I left my home country I felt at home at any other place I went to. I enjoy getting to know more cultures by talking to strangers and hearing their philosophy about life. Speaking with gestures when you can not find a shared language, finding places only the locals go to and learn about their customs and values. Hanging out with local people makes me happy. The experience of every new place is a step out of your comfort zone where I like to wander around until it feels like a second home.
