The West Coast
On the West Coast of Sweden you can find rock carvings from the Vikings. The area of Tanum is covered in granite rocks where rock carvings from the Bronze age are being found quite often.

Unesco world heritage
The village of Tanum is home to rock carvings from the Vikings who left their work their during the Bronze Age. It’s part of the UNESCO world heritage. The granite bedrock is lake the old canvas of the Vikings and it has depictions of women and men, dogs, birds and deer, weapons and ships. It’s amazing how this is not done with paint but with carving. It must have cost the vikings lots of time! These carvings were never red originally. It’s the local Vitlycke museum that has painted most images red so that they are easier to see.
Depictions from vikings
I am also amazed by the way the Vikings make a difference in men and women in these rock carvings. The depicted women have a round figure between their legs, which represents fertility like showing an egg. The men on the other hand have a huge stick figure between their legs, which makes them look like they have a proud erection. On the back side they also have a stick figure, which could represent a sword.

Free entrance
There are over 600 rock carving sites and they all still look greatly preserved. You can get very close as there are no fences nor restrictions build, plus the entrance is for free. They still find new carvings every now and then, but what else can you expect in such a lovely nature with many rocks.

About Renate Rigters
Ever since I left my home country I felt at home at any other place I went to. I enjoy getting to know more cultures by talking to strangers and hearing their philosophy about life. Speaking with gestures when you can not find a shared language, finding places only the locals go to and learn about their customs and values. Hanging out with local people makes me happy. The experience of every new place is a step out of your comfort zone where I like to wander around until it feels like a second home.
