Perseid meteor shower promises enchantment
Looking for something romantic tonight?
Tonight mother nature has shooting stars on the menu.
Invite your loved one over for a beautiful evening of watching shooting stars or enjoy the dark sky enchanted by the power of light from your lazy chair in the garden accompanied by perhaps an ice cold beer.
traces of luminosity
Meteors are the traces of luminosity that occasionally appear in a flash during the night sky. In popular parlance they are also called shooting stars. However, the flashes have nothing to do with stars, which often are thousands of light years away.
They are atmospheric phenomena occurring 80 to 120 miles above our heads. The real nature of meteors is that they are small pieces of rock and dust, often no bigger than a pebble, which by coincidence reach the atmosphere of our planet. This happens at such a high speed that the air of the stone is highly compressed and greatly heated. The stones themselves will often kind of vaporize due to the heat.
The highlighted track in the sky that one sees are molecules from the atmosphere, which are beaten apart by the heat after which their atoms are ionized and subsequently they recombine, producing light.
Bright meteors (brighter than the planet Venus) are also known as fireballs.
Watching shooting stars
If the sky isn’t too cloudy you might just get a really pretty end of the day tonight. According to the weather predictions this year’s the sky will be clear and most meteors will fall between 23:00 and 05:00 on the night between Augustus 12 and August 13. However, a nearly full moon (Supermoon) will make it hard to view this year’s meteor shower. Let’s keep our fingers crossed and hopefully see a few fireballs!
Get yourself out there tonight and observe the starry sky from your own backyard.

About Renate Rigters
Ever since I left my home country I felt at home at any other place I went to. I enjoy getting to know more cultures by talking to strangers and hearing their philosophy about life. Speaking with gestures when you can not find a shared language, finding places only the locals go to and learn about their customs and values. Hanging out with local people makes me happy. The experience of every new place is a step out of your comfort zone where I like to wander around until it feels like a second home.
