Time for some more motor riding! Ollantaytambo, I have to say goodbye for now, because more amazing places are on my route! If I can find them, that is.

Maras is one of the places I want to visit today. Not just because of its Inca ruins, but because there Ishould be able to find some salt mines. During the ride towards Maras we see clouds around the mountains, where I’ve been driving through the last couple of days, clearing up and the view gets really indescribable.

After some photo stops I finally reach the Salineras and enter the place to find out that from the top the view is way better than from close by.

Salineras

My next sightseeing point should not be too far away, but it seems that I’m heading the wrong direction. Some kids are shouting something at me while I pass them and after seeing only more sheep and some pigs I realize that they we’re trying to tell me that the ruins aren’t up this way. The countryside is nice too, but I have to go back to where I came from to reach the Inca ruins. After some more nice views I finally see something that looks like as if it’s made by aliens. For some reason those Incas we’re really good at making perfect round constructions, so this reminded me of the alien movies where they land UFO’s and leave a round mark.

There’s still some more left to see! I drive further up North until I get to Pisaq. A good place to have lunch, especially while the kids are celebrating Carnaval, is right on the main square. During the carnival period all the kids carry buckets of water and they make tiny wars between the groups of friends, which I love to look at during my lunch from a safe terrace up high where I can’t get hit.

This might just be the best day of the entire trip. The only bad part is that today the trip ends. I now have to go back to Cusco, where for sure a new adventure awaits me!

About Renate Rigters

Ever since I left my home country I felt at home at any other place I went to. I enjoy getting to know more cultures by talking to strangers and hearing their philosophy about life. Speaking with gestures when you can not find a shared language, finding places only the locals go to and learn about their customs and values. Hanging out with local people makes me happy. The experience of every new place is a step out of your comfort zone where I like to wander around until it feels like a second home.
