In the center of Tortuguero village there are a couple of restaurants, most of them with local food. Since I can’t see anymore rice and beans on my plate I started browsing through the little harbor town for something a bit more, well let’s say, European.

Budda Cafe

While strolling thru town I find a white building at the riverside with a beautiful and inviting entrance. The place looks absolutely gorgeous. I walk up to the garden of the building where many tables stand decorated with romantic colors. The place is called Budda Cafe and has a lovely ambient. I want to have a look at the menu, so I decide to sit down at the pier where the river view is best. Salads, pastas, pizzas, it all sounds good. However, I decide to ask for their specialty, which is pizza and I order after the waitress’s advice.

Diner is served

My beer is served with a smile and my pizza comes quite soon after it. It all tastes good.

They only “mess up” – if you would look at the place with strict European eyes – would be some details. The owner’s dog is asking me for food during the entire meal and the sound of a new message on the Facebook messenger is constantly appearing while the music plays, since one of the employees is probably playing with the internet and being the DJ at the same laptop.

Great choice!

However, for about 20 US dollars you eat a pizza, have two beers, order a delicious and calories-full desert (I had a Budda Brownie which I honestly give 100 points!) and get a spectacular view at the Tortuguero park by the riverside.

About Renate Rigters

Ever since I left my home country I felt at home at any other place I went to. I enjoy getting to know more cultures by talking to strangers and hearing their philosophy about life. Speaking with gestures when you can not find a shared language, finding places only the locals go to and learn about their customs and values. Hanging out with local people makes me happy. The experience of every new place is a step out of your comfort zone where I like to wander around until it feels like a second home.
