It’s my fifth day here at the Italian Alps today and again, I woke up with a smile.
Especially after yesterday’s day of work mixed with a snowboard session.
What a great place to spend a few months at!

Nice curves!

Three months of winter wonderland

The road is getting a bit more slippery as I drive from Germany into Austria and see a beautiful mountain scenery in front of me. There’s not to much snow, yet enough to make me stare at its white enchantment. So pretty. I pick up the Motorway Vignette at the first gas station I find as I cross the border. It’s an obligation to have one when you drive through Austria. It won’t take long now before I reach my destination, I only have to pass through Innsbruck, cross the Italian border and drive through the mountains. The curves in the mountain roads make me slow down a bit since I can’t see the next few meters and don’t know what’s awaiting me. Every other ten minutes there’s a local car behind me that must love to race through these slippery mountain tracks and tries to overtake me. When I reach Val Gardena I take a right turn for my new home and settle in for the long-haul. Three months of winter wonder land.
However, real snow has yet to come…

We’d love a bit more snow please!

Thank you!

Yes, I’m a boarder

The first few days fly by as I try to get familiar with the entire area and especially with the locations of the hotels. I’ll be visiting them a lot for my guide job. A cozy breakfast with my roomies (if they’re around) starts every brand new day and it ends the same with dinner. I already have some favorite places to go to for a drink and a pizza and I met someone who works here, who’s going to be my snowboarding buddy for the season. Yay! By the way. The entire boarding thing is not very popular over here as I’ve seen way more skies and people talk more about skiing instead of boarding. When I say that I’m a boarder I might even see a little smile appearing on the persons face followed by some funny criticism on snowboarding. Nothing with bad intentions though. Thankfully it’s just all about teasing the boarders.

Happy boarding!

About Renate Rigters

Ever since I left my home country I felt at home at any other place I went to. I enjoy getting to know more cultures by talking to strangers and hearing their philosophy about life. Speaking with gestures when you can not find a shared language, finding places only the locals go to and learn about their customs and values. Hanging out with local people makes me happy. The experience of every new place is a step out of your comfort zone where I like to wander around until it feels like a second home.
