When I was a small kid I used to be always very nervous the days before my birthday. A month before the party date I would start making a wishlist and I’d hang it on the refrigerator, asking for a horse, a trip to anywhere and some drawing material.

It was also always fun selecting a certain outfit for your birthday. I remember my mom and I finding the perfect excuse for some shopping right before our birthdays.

In the Netherlands we celebrate a birthday with family in the afternoon having coffee and cake, while you all sit in a circle in the living-room or in the garden. After that your friends come and so does the wine and the beers.

The last eight years it wasn’t like that anymore. I was either traveling and spent my birthday with local people abroad or I went back home and made a party with friends and some family in the evening.

I never lost that nervous feeling though.

Hungry for birthday-cake!

Three weeks before my birthday

It’s about three weeks before my birthday and I have no idea what I am going to do by then. I have to work the entire day and I just got the news from Le boyfriend that I should try to please get the day off. Is he taking me somewhere? How did he manage to get a day off himself anyway? Well, I can try. I ask a good friend of mine on the island to replace my work as a guide for a day and luckily he agrees. So no tour guiding for me on my birthday! Thanks Bassie 🙂

Discovering the plans

Today is the day that I will hopefully find out what the plans are for tomorrow. Tomorrow is my birthday, yay! We organized a dinner party with some friends at Acropolis restaurant around 9 and I am ready to do some celebrating. When my friends arrive we all sit down outside at a long dinner table. One of my friends simply loves birthdays and she can’t wait to pull out the balloons and sing the birthday song. The day before it was one of my friends who had a birthday so we’re even having a double party tonight.

After midnight my boyfriend walks up to me and nervously asks me to come inside the restaurant. He has a card for me. On the card there’s a beautiful picture of us surrounded with sweet words written around it. On the backside he wrote a note saying I will have to get up at 8:45 tomorrow morning and that he has an entire day planned for the both of us. I can see the effort he has put into his plans because he has the cutest look on his face, not being sure if I’d like it. Of course I already love this, now I’m even more curious about tomorrow.

What to wear?

It’s 8:45 in the morning and my boyfriend’s alarm is making sure we know that. He tells me to put on my bikini and to take a towel with me. He also says that I should prepare something nice to wear afterwards. Where is he taking me? What did he organize? I can’t come up with what it might be.

I ask him if how we’re going to leave the house – with the car or scooter. He replies that first we’ll use the scooter and afterwards the car and now he got me even more lost. We take off with the scooter in our swimwear carrying a towel with us and I notice that we’re heading towards the hotel where we use the gym now and then. I know that there’s a spa there too, so could that be our morning plan?

We enter Sound of the Sea and Thom explains me his plans for us.

Bubbles and bubbles

He takes me to the spa of the hotel where he organized for us to have the entire spa to ourselves. The local masseur is ready to give us a massage and we get to enjoy the Jacuzzi as long as we want. We have to make sure we don’t stay here too long here though, since mister boyfriend also arranged a fancy dinner at THE romantic place out of town 🙂

Thank you for the great day baby! <3 Also for the bracelet, which I unfortunately, as you know, already lost… 🙁

About Renate Rigters

Ever since I left my home country I felt at home at any other place I went to. I enjoy getting to know more cultures by talking to strangers and hearing their philosophy about life. Speaking with gestures when you can not find a shared language, finding places only the locals go to and learn about their customs and values. Hanging out with local people makes me happy. The experience of every new place is a step out of your comfort zone where I like to wander around until it feels like a second home.
