Anecdotes from Brasil
The sound of the ocean with its waves gently touching the beach makes me feel relaxed. It gives me exactly the same feeling as those meditation songs people play for yoga and such.
The great ambiance gets disturbed for a few minutes when three touristy party boats arrive to the bay and turn their dance music up. I soon realize it’s not too bad actually. I like music and the combination of this song and the waves might be really suitable for me.

I see some people jumping off the boats, screaming while they do so. As I look behind the boats I can see land. Maybe it’s an island? I don’t know, but I’ll find out for sure. The boats turn up their music a bit more and a beat that I’ve been hearing a lot recently pumps through their speakers. “Where do I know this song from,” I’m thinking as I just realize it’s the song everyone was playing a week ago during the Carnival on the streets of Rio de Janeiro.
Now an enormous ant is passing my foot. Or maybe it’s a spider? It looks like something in between those two creatures and I decide to put it away with my flipflop since I’ve got no idea if it can bite me. In the meanwhile the water of the ocean is getting closer to my feet and I have to pull my towel away before it all gets wet. Are my toes getting red? I guess they’re a bit burned. Perhaps I should put some more sunscreen factor 30. I just bought a new sunblock from a beach vendor at Copacabana foe R$ 25, and I’ve got no idea if it was a good deal, but he asked R$ 60 before my barging moves… The bottle says ‘Sundown protector solar oficial fifa wordcup Brasil’. I think I should go get some snorkeling gear in a bit and stop sunbathing. After all I’m at the Praia da Tartaruga; the beach of the turtle!
About Renate Rigters
Ever since I left my home country I felt at home at any other place I went to. I enjoy getting to know more cultures by talking to strangers and hearing their philosophy about life. Speaking with gestures when you can not find a shared language, finding places only the locals go to and learn about their customs and values. Hanging out with local people makes me happy. The experience of every new place is a step out of your comfort zone where I like to wander around until it feels like a second home.
