I’m driving from Pigadia to the South of the island. There is a supermarket on my right where a man is standing still with his van. He is making a phone call and wants to continue his voyage without noticing that I’m passing by. He almost hits me, but I can still safely drive passed him. Then I see a gas station on my left, full with cars, and another one on my right. The second one is closed. It has actually always been closed and we have only three gas stations on the island, which could have been four. Still, nowadays the closed gas station looks more like a parking spot. There’s a boat parked next to the pump and a white car with a black painted rooftop. I see a sign with the word Amoopi. Here’s the first exit from the main road to get to the beach of Amoopi and the red Toyota across the exit always reminds me of it. However, today I’m not going to Amoopi. I’m driving just a little bit further.

A sign with Airport and Afiartis pass my sight now. On my left there’s something that looks like an old castle, but I’m assuming it’s an old windmill. The English guy is supposed to live there. I believe John is his name. I met him somewhere in one of the local coffee shops. Whoops, curve coming up! I need to slow down my speed because it’s hot and the roads are slippery.

The utility poles seem to follow me as the overhead power lines here in Greece cross my path continuously. There is also a little island appearing on my left close to the beach. On my right there is nothing special besides a couple of mountains, or actually they are more like tiny little hills. The sea-side looks much more exciting.

I can see the end of the island now, the ultimate South of Karpathos. I spot a ship wreck and I’m curious how it got there. Someday, I’m guessing, it will be a nice dive spot, but for now it’s still visible from the land. Plenty of scooters pass me, like really a lot of them, even while the wind is almost blowing them away. I have my car door-windows open and so my hair dances on the wind. I just took a shower before getting into the car, but I’m sure my hair will be dry by the time I reach my destination with this wind. A valley with stones is on my left now and almost all the stones are painted. I see a lot of purple, pink and blue colors on them. Seeing the stones makes me feel I am getting closer to my destination.

I reach the airport, but the sign saying Diakoftis is confusing me. Should I go left or right? Well, I have to pass the airport anyway and then we’ll see where I have to go to. I think I should follow the sign with St. Nicholas, but it also leads me to Arkassa and that’s where I don’t want to go today. I enter the road anyway until I see to many kitesurfers and realize I must have passed it already. Let’s go back, shall we?

Michaliou Kipos

Now I spot the sign I wanted to see. Michaliou Kipos it says. I think I’ve found what I was looking for and now I get to take my picture. I promised myself to take one great shot, so here it comes.

About Renate Rigters

Ever since I left my home country I felt at home at any other place I went to. I enjoy getting to know more cultures by talking to strangers and hearing their philosophy about life. Speaking with gestures when you can not find a shared language, finding places only the locals go to and learn about their customs and values. Hanging out with local people makes me happy. The experience of every new place is a step out of your comfort zone where I like to wander around until it feels like a second home.
