On the road…

Holiday experience

Perhaps it is unfortunate that my German is not that great, but because of that my holiday experience in Germany might be bigger!
I drove from Brabant with my Ford Fiesta to Karlsruhe and meanwhile my sister kept me company. A holiday feeling entered my stomach crossing the border, but actually it was more like a family visit. We stopped twice for a latte macchiato and a toilet break, and after 5 hours we reached our destination: Oberreut (district of Karlsruhe).

In Oberreut you will find a glider base – you know, for those floating airplanes – which is surrounded by a forest. The forest is filled with shadow and therefor ideal for a morning run or a ride on the bike. You can run along the airport surroundings briefly for a sprint to enjoy a different view, though you will run in the sun.

Das fest

Eating outside on a terrace is very nice in Germany, but especially in the Biergartens. I visited the Schupi beer garden and I have never finished my meal as quick as I did there, delicious food! They certainly not only have fat German sausage, but also many healthy meals with a lot of vegetables.

Looking for entertainment?

Each year, the open-air festival Das Fest is being held in Karlsruhe where artists like Seeed (German reggae / dancehall band from Berlin) perform. This year the festival was being held on 25-27 July and I could enjoy it a few hours for free, because the entrance is for free! You can walk around throughout the festival area and stand in front of a stage if you like to. It is pleasantly busy and people are not pushing or walking on your feet.
Would you like to have a better view at the main-stage? Then you do have to buy a ticket online for about 8 euros. I certainly think it is much cheaper than the festivals in The Netherlands, so that is a big plus!

Public transport is well organized in Karlsruhe, you can get around by yourself without having to take expensive taxis or private transport. I think the tram is a nice way of transportation in the city and its use during the festival was for free!

About Renate Rigters

Ever since I left my home country I felt at home at any other place I went to. I enjoy getting to know more cultures by talking to strangers and hearing their philosophy about life. Speaking with gestures when you can not find a shared language, finding places only the locals go to and learn about their customs and values. Hanging out with local people makes me happy. The experience of every new place is a step out of your comfort zone where I like to wander around until it feels like a second home.
