Two weeks ago I was invited to Sweden at the Stockholm Archipelago and together with a lot of sportive outdoor activities also plenty of Swedish culture had to be experienced. Part of this is the traditional crayfish partying after a hot sauna with a beer.

The crayfish party is a summertime (August and September) celebration where you eat heaps of crayfish and drink lots of beer and Schnapps. You can eat the crayfish with your fingers, since the food is cold and it is even acceptable behavior to enjoy sucking out the juices of your crayfish and the finger licking afterwards. For some reason you have to wear a funny paper hat during the feast and spontaneously sing some drinking songs while encouraging everyone to join in and have a Schnapps.

As I don’t remember too much of this specific evening (bummer!) I just thought I should share the song I some how do still remember. Well, I remember the ‘Helan går’ part of it and then I have to look again at the paper the Swedish gave to me.

The Schnapps song

Helan går

Helan går,
jsung hopp, faderallan lallan lej.
Helan går,
sjung hopp, faderallan lej.
Och den som inte helan tar,
han heller inte halvan får.
Helan går!
Sjun hopp, faderallan lej!

Phonetic transliteration

Hal and Gore,
Shun hop, father Alan lalan ley,
Hal and Gore,
Shun hop, father Alan ley.
Oh handsome in the hell and tar
an’ Hal are in the half and four.
Hal and Gore!
Shun hop, father Alan ley!

Did you ever experience a crayfish party or sang the Schnapps song in Sweden?

About Renate Rigters

Ever since I left my home country I felt at home at any other place I went to. I enjoy getting to know more cultures by talking to strangers and hearing their philosophy about life. Speaking with gestures when you can not find a shared language, finding places only the locals go to and learn about their customs and values. Hanging out with local people makes me happy. The experience of every new place is a step out of your comfort zone where I like to wander around until it feels like a second home.
