Hostel review Mar e Iguana in Panama
I arrived at Mar e Iguana hostel not knowing what to expect. Maybe a couple of Rastafarian people hanging at the bar or maybe some Iguanas making this place feel like home once I arrive? However, when I saw the website I knew it was going to be a very relaxed place close to the beach, but I did not know it would be so cool as it actually really was!
So much to explore!
After having been on the bus and the boat in the morning I arrived at the Mar e Iguana hostel in Bocas del Toro at noon. The owner, Riccardo, and the receptionist, Carolina, were there to greet me. With a big smile on their face they welcomed me into my new home for the next couple of days. They showed me the room that existed of a dorm with 3 bunk beds, the separate shower outside, the toilet for the ladies, the optional tours and a map with all the pretty beaches nearby on the island. So much to explore! They recommended me to definitely visit the Playa Estrella (or Starfish beach in English), which is accessible by bus with a thirty minute ride. Also the tour to the other islands was highly recommended, but it is also possible to visit some islands on your own.
Mar e Iguana offers tours too! The good thing is that they have their own boat and will take the tourists themselves without asking for any tour operator to do the tour for them. In that way the service is more personal and better, especially since the owner of Mar e Iguana, Riccardo, runs his tours with his own boat π
The dormitory
On my first night I met two other girls and two other guys sleeping in the same dorm. You get to know each other quite fast and it is a lot of fun meeting new people who do the same travels as you do!
The bed was great. The mattress was actually perfect for my kind of taste. Not too soft, not too hard and it still felt pretty new.
The room had an air-conditioning, which makes it all a lot more comfortable in this hot weather. I should mention that they only have a cold shower by the way, so that was a bit disappointing to me since I love a hot shower with any kind of weather (especially to wash my hair π ). However, the weather in Bocas del Toro is pretty hot, so a cold shower is really fine after all.
Mar e Iguana has their own bar. The Irie Lion Muzik Bar. That’s how they call it. For reasonable prices you can get a drink, or even better, wait for the happy hour!
The Mar e Iguana hostel is the perfect place to relax and enjoy Bocas del Toro. Located right beside the beach of the Caribbean side of Panama’s beautiful island and just a few minutes away from town by foot.

About Renate Rigters
Ever since I left my home country I felt at home at any other place I went to. I enjoy getting to know more cultures by talking to strangers and hearing their philosophy about life. Speaking with gestures when you can not find a shared language, finding places only the locals go to and learn about their customs and values. Hanging out with local people makes me happy. The experience of every new place is a step out of your comfort zone where I like to wander around until it feels like a second home.
