The sound of the water with its tiny waves hitting the beach makes me feel very relaxed. It gives me exactly the same feeling as those meditation songs you can download to your iPhone. The great ambiance at this natural area gets disturbed for a few minutes when three touristy party boats arrive to the bay and they turn their music on. It’s not too bad actually, because I do love music. The combination of sounds, the party and the waves, might be really suitable for me.

I see some people jumping of the boats into the sea, screaming while they do so as if it’s the last thing they’ll ever do. As I look behind the boats and the jumping people I can see land. Maybe it’s an island? I don’t know, but I’ll find out later on for sure. The boats turn up the volume of their speakers and a beat that I’ve been hearing a lot the last couple of days blasts through their music-installation. I just realize that this was the song everybody was playing on the streets of Rio during Carnaval last week.

Now an enormous ant is passing my feet. Or maybe it is a spider? I’m confused, because it has giant legs, but the body of an ant. It must be something in between those two creatures. We’re in Brazil after all and I wouldn’t know what kind of bugs I can find down here at the beach… I move the spider-ant away with my Ipanema flip-flop since I have no idea if it is going to bit me when I’d leave it there to say hi. In the meanwhile the water of the ocean is getting closer to my feet too and I have to pull my canga away before it all gets wet.

Are my toes getting red? I guess they’re a bit burned, so I should put some sunscreen. Maybe a factor 30 for Brazil would do the trick. A few days ago I bought a sunblock from a beach vendor at Copacabana for $R 25, but I’ve got no idea if it was a good deal. Anyway he asked 60 before my bargaining moves. The bottle says Sundown Protector Oficial Fifa World Cup Brasil.

I think I should stop thinking so much now and get some snorkeling gear in a bit. I’m at the Praia da Tartaruga after all, the beach of the sea turtles! Ooeee, at the rental kiosk I also see a big surfboard!

First things first: I really want to try out the stand up paddling!

About Renate Rigters

Ever since I left my home country I felt at home at any other place I went to. I enjoy getting to know more cultures by talking to strangers and hearing their philosophy about life. Speaking with gestures when you can not find a shared language, finding places only the locals go to and learn about their customs and values. Hanging out with local people makes me happy. The experience of every new place is a step out of your comfort zone where I like to wander around until it feels like a second home.
