A self built raft inspired by ‘Life of Pi’

I found this article about a Czech visitor who had overstayed his tourist visa and did not have money for an airplane ticket. He tried to leave Taiwan on a self built raft to travel to Japan inspired by Life of Pi.

He left Oluanpi on Sunday with his raft, but did not travel very far. The task was tougher than he thought. He got exhausted from rowing and the self built raft began to break apart.

Thankfully, the Coast Guard Administration patrol boat saw him and picked him up, ending his adventure.

A fishing boat captain called the coast guard unit Sunday morning, explaining: “There is a foreigner floating at sea on a poor raft.”
“When we found him, the raft was already falling apart,” a coast guard officer said.

While traveling in Taiwan, the tourist saw Life of Pi, which gave him the inspiration to build a raft from materials he found on the beach.

About Renate Rigters

Ever since I left my home country I felt at home at any other place I went to. I enjoy getting to know more cultures by talking to strangers and hearing their philosophy about life. Speaking with gestures when you can not find a shared language, finding places only the locals go to and learn about their customs and values. Hanging out with local people makes me happy. The experience of every new place is a step out of your comfort zone where I like to wander around until it feels like a second home.
