Will Virgin America get passengers to watch the airline safety instructions?

You are sitting in an airplane for your next holiday destination, business meeting or maybe you are just heading home. As soon as everybody has taking their seat you wish the airplane starts his engines and takes off, but before all that you have to listen to these boring flight safety instructions. I know, I have flown all over the world and I even studies a professional course for a possible flight attended career. You have seen the safety instructions already over a million times, so why would you bother listening and watching again?

A couple of airlines noticed all the above and decided to make it more fun to watch. They started to create videos with animation. Well, we all liked it for about a month, but then it got boring again. Delta airlines created a new video in 2008 with their own ‘Deltina‘. A pretty flight attendant explains all the safety features with a smile and a naughty-looking wag of the finger while instructing that “Smoking … is not allowed.”

In 2011, Air New Zealand wanted a bit more character in their safety instructions, so they made a video featuring US fitness personality Richard Simmons and a leotard-clad cabin crew delivering flight safety messages. I got the YMCA feeling while watching this!

Cebu airlines started to think out of the box in 2010 and taught the flight attendants a dance on Lady Gaga’s Just Dance. This got a lot of media attention and people loved the new safety instructions.

Virgin America just launched their new safety instructions video 2 days ago and it is more like a music video from MTV! A great idea if you ask me. But will it maintain your attention on every other next flight?

About Renate Rigters

Ever since I left my home country I felt at home at any other place I went to. I enjoy getting to know more cultures by talking to strangers and hearing their philosophy about life. Speaking with gestures when you can not find a shared language, finding places only the locals go to and learn about their customs and values. Hanging out with local people makes me happy. The experience of every new place is a step out of your comfort zone where I like to wander around until it feels like a second home.
