Poseidon Cave in Pigadia
The Poseidon Cave in the valley of Pigadia.
One of Karpathos island’s natural sites is the cave of Poseidon. It was used either as a rock-cut tomb or a sanctuary dedicated to Poseidon or Aphrodite. For those who do not know Aphrodite, she is the Greek goddess of love and beauty. You can visit this cave on foot from the city center and the entrance is for free. Not much is yet known about this cave, but if you have time to go and explore it’s very much worth it.

Caves that once were underwater
When looking around the entrance of the cave you find many shells and even pieces of coral inside the walls which makes you think “where these caves once underwater?”.
Yet it seems like lately shepherds have been using the caves for shelter because it has a visible recent human touch to it.
Explore the inside of the cave and find big and small shells hidden along the walls of the entire area. What you will see today is a much more eroded version of this once beautiful cave.

How to get there
How to get to the Poseidon Cave in Pigadia
First of all, you need to be in Pigadia. From the city center you can walk towards the North, passing Astron Princess on your left and the Louloudis supermarket on your right. Just after you see the blue colored taverna of 7-eleven you turn into the street on your left. There you will need to keep walking into the Valley of Pigadia for about 10 minutes. You’ll walk past some houses and then you finally reach the hills of the valley. On your left you will find a mysterious looking stairways, build inside the hill. That stairway goes up about 10 to maybe 15 meters. It’s not easy to spot the cave directly from the road, but once you’re on the stairway you will see it.
To make it even easier, here are some photos and a map.

Here’s also a video from my visit in 2017.

About Renate Rigters
Ever since I left my home country I felt at home at any other place I went to. I enjoy getting to know more cultures by talking to strangers and hearing their philosophy about life. Speaking with gestures when you can not find a shared language, finding places only the locals go to and learn about their customs and values. Hanging out with local people makes me happy. The experience of every new place is a step out of your comfort zone where I like to wander around until it feels like a second home.
