The Deepblu Cosmiq+ dive computer for scuba diving and freediving. A dive computer that connects to your smart phone through the Deepblu app to log all your dives. You charge it with a cable, it has a practical and a clear screen format, plus it’s affordable!

A while back Deepblu reached out to me to ask if I’d like to review their Cosmiq+ dive computer and I was pretty thrilled to try out a new piece of dive gear.

My Deepblu Cosmiq+ dive computer arrived to me in the Maldives. The first thing I did was take off the bracelet and change it to the bungee cord. I was eager to go into the water and try it out immediately, but unfortunately I had caught a cold. Luckily I have such enthusiastic colleagues who also enjoy trying out new gear and they baptized my new dive computer in the Maldivian ocean. First Thom took it for a freedive in the morning and in the afternoon one of my colleagues took my CosmiqPlus dive computer for its very first scuba dive. I was excited to see it leave for the water, but annoying not to be there to see it hit the water for the first time. Questions started to pop up in my head like “is it really waterproof?” while I just had to wait for my colleagues to come back and give me the news. A little bit of time later (while traveling from the Maldives to Greece) I got the chance to try it out myself for the first time. Finally!

  • User easiness

Upon receiving the Cosmiq+ I started pushing the two buttons to get it to work, but it needed charging first. Once it is charged it’s very easy to explore the functions of the Cosmiq+ and with only two buttons you can’t do much wrong. The button on the left lets you scroll and the button on the right lets you change the settings. Press both buttons and the computer goes On or Off. Once the Cosmiq+ is connected to your smartphone you can change the settings from there – like safety alarms – which makes life a lot easier really.

  • Battery life and charging

Before you go diving you charge the lithium-ion battery from the Deepblu Cosmiq+ dive computer. It has a magnetic contact point on the side that you connect via a USB cable with electricity. While it charges it shows you a loading battery bar. Once it’s full it should last about 12 hours in a conservative screen setting mode. You can turn the Cosmiq+ on and off, which helps the battery life. You could also leave the Cosmiq+ on standby, but you will lose battery life in this way.

  • Screen

The screen is at its best when the sunlight is not hitting it directly from above. At depth it is extremely clear and even the colors are well visible. I’ll promise to upload some photos of the Cosmiq+ at depth soon!

Algorithm

The Cosmiq+ is a Bühlmann ZHL-16C- model with three different safety models; conservative, normal and progressive. You can change the EAN percentage between 21%-40% and from 1.4 to 1.6 PPO2. Perfect, as anything above 1.6 PPO2 is not necessary at all.

Logbook

The logbook on the dive computer doesn’t have too much space, so you need to log it in an app (or just write it down after every dive). The Deepblu app is easily found in any smart phone app library and you will need to connect the Cosmiq+ to your smartphone. Especially for logging your dives. Once you go into the app you can connect your Cosmiq+ which is pretty straight forward and then it also makes sure you’ve got the right date and time on the dive computer straight away!

Here’s what I think about the Deepblu Cosmiq+ dive computer.

Conclusion

Disadvantages

  • The battery doesn’t last more than 12 hours so you need to charge it often. It’s not good to leave it on standby, especially knowing that going on a flight might take the Cosmiq+ to higher altitude settings and block usage for some time so you have something to think about when traveling.
  • The screen might reflect sunlight in shallow water and this makes it harder to read on the surface.

Advantages

  • The battery of the Cosmiq+ lasts as it is rechargeable, so no need to buy spare ones! This is very good for the environment and makes it a more ‘green’ dive computer.
  • The size of the entire dive computer is compact yet with a readable screen, so basically a perfect size for a dive computer.
  • The screen-colors are very visible underwater and the size of the shown details on the screen makes it easy to understand your depth and time.
  • The connection with your smart phone always keeps the Cosmiq+ up-to-date.
  • It has an accurate depth measurement as I compared it with a Suunto, Scubapro and Cressi dive computer.
  • It has an awesome style and it actually looks good on men and women!

About Renate Rigters

Ever since I left my home country I felt at home at any other place I went to. I enjoy getting to know more cultures by talking to strangers and hearing their philosophy about life. Speaking with gestures when you can not find a shared language, finding places only the locals go to and learn about their customs and values. Hanging out with local people makes me happy. The experience of every new place is a step out of your comfort zone where I like to wander around until it feels like a second home.
