What happened here? I think while I walk through the biggest city of Brabant, or as I like to call it: Brabantia. Eindhoven is not the capital of the Netherlands nor the capital of the Dutch province Brabant, but it is the biggest city of Brabant and it sure is vibrant. A lot of art and design makes it a beautiful city, while normally I am not even a big fan of big cities.

Today I go to Eindhoven for a short visit to my graduation coach and this allows me to see the city again and all the stores I should not be looking at right now. Aaah! It-is-to-dif-fi-cult! I have to enter a shoe store and try there lovely heels, which of course I cannot afford to buy. I am in heaven for a minute and then wake-up because I have to give the heels back and put my old boots back on.

I decide to walk towards the train station and see a big crowd at the new square next to the McDonald’s. Normally it is a square with not that much activity, only when the market is held on Wednesdays.

Eindhoven

Today for the first time I see street artists in Eindhoven. I am used to seeing musicians from Romania with their accordions or hairy hippy men with guitars, but I am not used to other performers wherever they might originate from.

Street artist act with a toilet at La Rambla in Barcelona

Barcelona is well known for its street artists on La Rambla. Have you ever been to Barcelona? I lived and worked in Barcelona as a guide and always had to show La Rambla to the tourists. La Rambla is a busy street, Barcelona’s main street actually, with a lot of market stalls and street artists. I think many local people prefer not to cross La Rambla because of the many people walking there and I bet 90% are tourists.

Luckily for me, since I do like La Rambla because there is a lot going on any time of the day, I do not have to miss the street artist exhibitions anymore. Nowadays I can just buy a train ticket to Eindhoven and enjoy the street artists in the center over there. I am wondering if they are there every day, but I will find out!

About Renate Rigters

Ever since I left my home country I felt at home at any other place I went to. I enjoy getting to know more cultures by talking to strangers and hearing their philosophy about life. Speaking with gestures when you can not find a shared language, finding places only the locals go to and learn about their customs and values. Hanging out with local people makes me happy. The experience of every new place is a step out of your comfort zone where I like to wander around until it feels like a second home.
