I stopped drinking alcohol. There, I said it. It’s not like I was drinking too much before, but I have plenty of reasons not to. Money + health is the main reason, but life is not just about saving money and maintaining a good health. There’s more to it that gives me plenty of reasons not to drink.

Reasons not the drink alcohol:

  1. Safety

With the lifestyle I have I get to do a lot of interesting things on a weekly base and if I would be drinking a bit the night before those things can’t happen. It can be about a simple walk in beautiful surroundings during my trips, but also extremer activities, like diving, surfing, climbing, snowboarding. It’s a lot more safe without drinking alcohol.

  2. Saving money

One drink costs a few coins, but if you’re going out you’ll have a big bill at the end of the night to have been able to keep on drinking. We never take just one drink now do we? Not drinking definitely safes me a lot of money.

  3. No more hangovers

No to hangovers and yes to happiness ! Yay!

  4. Missing out on things

I’d lose a lot of fun opportunities in my current lifestyle if I would be hangover 2 days a week. Imagine how many days that would be in a lifetime. You could sleep away or feel bad a big part of your life.

  5. Memories

For some people memory loss comes with drinking too much alcohol and I am one of those lucky ones. Not drinking means that I can remember all the conversations I had the night before.

  6. Less calories

    Less beer = less calories!

  7. Consciousness

I am more conscious about all the things I do and the decisions I make.

  8. More clear thoughts

I am trying to brainstorm more and analyze my thoughts which just gets a smack in the face when I would be drinking, so that goes a lot better now.

  9. Healthiness

I feel more healthy. The body definitely suffers from alcohol and it takes away a lot of energy. Even though it’s socially accepted to drink, I think going crazy on a Saturday night ain’t good for anybody.

This doesn’t mean that I won’t want to drink a glass of nice wine when I’m on a holiday and it is totally okay to do so. It’s just the extensive drinking that I will avoid and also the weekly or even daily drinks at some destinations. We are simply humans and it’s okay to make mistakes, but not touching a glass gives a satisfying and even better feeling.

Tip.

Here’s a tip for those who would like to try to stop with alcohol too. Make this something you do together. I started this personal challenge with my partner and it gives a lot of motivation to do this with someone else.

Could you live without alcohol? Have you ever tried?

About Renate Rigters

Ever since I left my home country I felt at home at any other place I went to. I enjoy getting to know more cultures by talking to strangers and hearing their philosophy about life. Speaking with gestures when you can not find a shared language, finding places only the locals go to and learn about their customs and values. Hanging out with local people makes me happy. The experience of every new place is a step out of your comfort zone where I like to wander around until it feels like a second home.
