10 ways to travel the world and get paid for it

Want to travel the world? But you don’t have enough money to do so? Stop worrying! You probably think that it’s all the rich kids who get to travel, but have you ever considered an option where you get paid to travel somewhere?
How many times haven’t we heard people around us say: “I don’t have the money to travel”? It’s not like you need thousands of euros or dollars or whatever currency you are dealing with. Did you ever think about getting a job abroad? It’s not that difficult to get a job in a foreign country and it’s something often overlooked by those who would love to set foot in a different culture.
If you are flexible and not to focused on your career you’ll easily find yourself a backpackers job in another country. Some jobs may need you to spend half a year somewhere, while others may only ask for your presence for 3 weeks. Most of the traveler’s jobs give you the chance to see more of a country in a cheaper and exclusive way.
Here are a few examples of travelers jobs abroad that you might want to consider:
1. Do a summer or winter season
Travel and move along with the seasons. You can work as a ski or snowboard instructor at a ski resort, surf instructor on the beach, tour rep for a touroperator, bartender in a après-ski bar, receptionist at a camping site, organize the beach games for the local beach club, you name it. Places that have tourists coming only during a certain period a year are depending on seasonal employees. There is a big demand for temporary labor at these holiday destinations. If you get there before the season starts or if you apply online you might find yourself working somewhere with a holiday vibe surrounding you. You’re there to make those tourist’s holidays even better. You can find more job ideas at Season Workers.

2. Help out at a hostel
If you have ever spent a night at a hostel you’ll know how the ambiance can be in such a cool work environment. Imagine yourself taking care of the reception, where you’ll be meeting a lot of interesting travelers who are spending the night. You can also work as a cleaner or as a cook, or perhaps they need someone to show the people around town. Almost all hostels have their employees coming and going. You don’t always get paid, but you do have a free bed and most of the time also breakfast. You can usually find a job at a hostel for as long as you want and you get to explore the local area in your free time without even spending money on a hotel. Have a look at Hostel Travel Jobs.

3. Work as a Dive Master
With so many great dive destinations around the globe this option has become very popular for those who enjoy the sea and traveling. If you are a certified diver and you wouldn’t mind helping out at a dive center by carrying some tanks, you might just get a job where the payment is for you to become a Dive Master. Once you’ve done that, you can travel the world and work at dive centers showing others the beauty of the ocean. You can expect a free room and sometimes food. Take a look at ScubaBoard for more inspiration.

4. Join an entertainment team at a hotel
Aqua aerobics, pool games, kids club, musicals, hokey pokeys and a lot of other fun things are part of an entertainers job at a tourist destination. You usually work 6 days a week and have 3 shift a day, but you will have time to sleep on the beach in the afternoon because you get to party every night. A good entertainment company in Spain is FestaMusic.
5. Work on a sailboat
If you love the ocean and enjoy spending time on a boat then you should get a job on a cruise or on a sailboat. It might mean cooking, cleaning, organizing day trips or snorkeling trips, but you get to travel for free by boat! At Work on a Boat you can register to become a boat crew member.

6. Guide tourists
If you’re a fanatic about cultures, history and nature then you can share the things you know with other tourists and make a job out of it. Visit the most unique places for your work as a guide and learn more about the local ways and stories. It’s not a job that will make you rich, but you will get a bunch of amazing experiences while guiding your tours and of course you can get tip. Contact local agencies or tour operators to apply.

7. Work as an Au Pair
Do you love kids? Working as an Au Pair means that you will become part of a new family for a few months or even a year. You get a room in the house and meals in exchange for spending time with the kids. You get to make local friends and visit places in your free time. You usually get the weekends off. A good website for Au Pair work is Interexchange.

8. Be a bartender or a waiter
Have you ever noticed that most people working in bars and restaurants are from abroad? For a beginning bartender the best places to look at are at party destinations, but you can also find bar jobs at the calmer holiday spots. Imagine yourself laying on the beach during the day, zipping on a cocktail and starting your job in the evening where you also get a tip! Jobs in restaurants and bars that you can also think of are bus boys, dish washers, DJ and hosts.

9. Online freelancer
If you’re the kind of person who has knowledge about creating webpages, photography, videos, SEO, you name it. Travel with your laptop and the other possible gear you need and you might find yourself working on a project in a hammock near the beach.

10. Volunteer
Most volunteering jobs offer free food and a place to stay. You get an amazing experience which is very rewarding as you’re helping people out somewhere. Some volunteering organizations you might find interesting are Grassroots Volunteering and Go Overseas.

It’s all hard work and you won’t earn much, but it does keep you on the road.

About Renate Rigters
Ever since I left my home country I felt at home at any other place I went to. I enjoy getting to know more cultures by talking to strangers and hearing their philosophy about life. Speaking with gestures when you can not find a shared language, finding places only the locals go to and learn about their customs and values. Hanging out with local people makes me happy. The experience of every new place is a step out of your comfort zone where I like to wander around until it feels like a second home.
