Mellieha is world-class destination for anyone seeking the relaxed atmosphere and sunshine of a provincial Mediterranean town. The beaches that line the coast of the bay are some of the finest on Malta, so if you want to maximize your time in the island’s natural beauty, here are 4 tips on how to explore the best of what Mellieha has to offer.

1. Discover the religious history of Mellieha

Like most Mediterranean towns, Mellieha is not short on rich archaeological sites. Begin your exploration by visiting one of Malta’s most cherished sites, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mellieha. Originally constructed in the late 16th century, this sanctuary contains a Byzantine fresco that’s rumored to have been painted by St. Luke.

Continuing with local religious history, the Mellieha Parish Church is another must-see site. Dedicated to the birth of Our Lady, it is a baroque 19th century chapel that was famously and painstakingly built by its own parish members. Art connoisseurs will note the five paintings by famous Maltese artist Giuseppe Cali.

2. Take a break with some musical fun

After leaving the Parish Church, take a stroll down to nearby Anchor Bay. Here you’ll find the fun and funky Malta Popeye Village, site of Paramount’s 1980 live-action musical, Popeye, starring Robin Williams. Be sure to hop-on one of the tour-boats that cruises the bay, and stick around for some choreographed singing from Popeye and his friends.

3. Brush up on local military history

Mellieha is also home to a variety of military relics, including a set of strategically placed buildings for communication and defense. These include two 17th century towers built by Grandmaster de Redin: the Ghajn Hadid Tower, situated near Mgiebah Bay, and the White Tower, which was recently adopted as a cultural heritage mark, and is located on the Marfia Ridge.

4. Relax and stroll the sandy coast

There are three main beaches located in the heart of Mellieha, the first is Ghadira Hadira (Mellieha Bay), which has clear shallow waters that are perfect for families with children or just lying in the surf.

Paradise Bay is slightly smaller but very popular, and is fully equipped with amenities like showers, sun beds, and umbrellas for hire.

Armier Bay has both a public beach as well as an exclusive private lido called Baia beach. Both have sun beds and umbrellas for hire, and both serve food and drink.

For your most secluded option, however, make your way to Slugs Bay, located off the Marfa Ridge and named after the local sea slugs. Be sure to keep an eye out for local marine life and divers.

With these tips on what to visit you’ll be able to cruise through Mellieha Bay in a day, but you’ll quickly discover that you want to stay longer.

About Renate Rigters

Ever since I left my home country I felt at home at any other place I went to. I enjoy getting to know more cultures by talking to strangers and hearing their philosophy about life. Speaking with gestures when you can not find a shared language, finding places only the locals go to and learn about their customs and values. Hanging out with local people makes me happy. The experience of every new place is a step out of your comfort zone where I like to wander around until it feels like a second home.
