Other travelers I meet share their travel experiences with me while we’re all on the travel-road trying to explore new places and different cultures. Today on the beach of Copacabana I met Christian from Switzerland who asked me to look after his belongings while he went for a shower. “I always look for another Gringo whenever I want to enter the sea or take a shower to leave my things with” he says. Christian, who had the time of his life a week ago in Salvador, Brazil for the Carnaval, had just one bad thing to tell me about his stay here.

Getting robbed in Brazil

Christian just arrived at his destination – Salvador – and the bright sun is welcoming him in the middle of this lovely afternoon. His carnaval party holiday literately lays around the corner, and he’s walking towards it with a big backpack on his back and one day-pack in front. His mobile phone is the only thing in his pockets, because he has the directions of the hostel saved on it and he might need to check them in a minute. As Christan is walking he notices four guys walking up to him all out of a sudden. They quickly get really close to him and start pushing him while one of them searches through his pockets. Christan is holding his day-pack tight. “Can you imagine? My credit-card, debit-card, everything was in there!” Christian explains. They quickly take off and before he realizes what had just happened his mobile phone is gone.

Once he arrives at the hostel he gets annoyed seeing everyone over there sending text messages, WhatsAps, and doing all kinds of things with their mobile phones while he can’t. “The worst thing is that I can’t read my messages anymore and that I have nothing to look stuff up with right now if there’s no computer around” he explains. He’ll have a friend send him a new phone through FedEx probably while he’s in Rio, but for now no phone for mister Christian. Fortunately it doesn’t bring him down and he’s enjoying the beach today as every other tourist should: leaving your belonging with another gringo while you’re off for a dip in the sea or the refreshing showers πŸ˜‰

About Renate Rigters

Ever since I left my home country I felt at home at any other place I went to. I enjoy getting to know more cultures by talking to strangers and hearing their philosophy about life. Speaking with gestures when you can not find a shared language, finding places only the locals go to and learn about their customs and values. Hanging out with local people makes me happy. The experience of every new place is a step out of your comfort zone where I like to wander around until it feels like a second home.

[…] picks me up in Copacabana with a minivan. Four girls from Israel and a guy from Switzerland (who I had also met a day before at the beach!) are already on the bus and during the ride some cool Brazilian funk music breaks the ice for us […]
