About a year ago I met Gabriela, a cheerful Brazilian young lady, who always tries to show people the best of her country with the passion she has. Together with Cristiana she recently started a language center called Bem-Vindo to teach Dutch-speaking people the beautiful Brazilian Portuguese Language. Since I love the fact that two dedicated Brazilian women started building their dream I felt like sharing it with you through an interview.
Why did you start teaching Portuguese to Dutch people?
As we live in the Netherlands we thought it would be perfect to offer the course to Dutch people, but we also have costumers in Belgium and from different nationalities.”
Who’s idea was it to start a language center?
It came from both of us. We had the same project and we thought we could go on with our own project, instead of working for someone else. We love teaching, and we wanted to bring to The Netherlands and Belgium a new concept of teaching and together we found a way to make our dream possible.”
How long have you been in the Netherlands now?
I have been here for five years and Cristiana for four years.”
What do you think makes you different from other language centers?
We offer an effective learning method during the customized modules which are tailored to the needs of our customers. We differentiate ourselves by our constructive and educational teaching method, making use of situations in which our customers learn how to communicate in a natural and fluent way. We try to bring Brazil into the class room by making use of books, newspapers, videos and music. Commitment, flexibility and efficiency are vitally important to us.”
You’re not teaching Portuguese, but Brazilian Portuguese, right?
Yes, we teach Brazilian Portuguese. It’s a little bit similar to the European Portuguese. We do not only teach the language, but also the culture. It’s difficult to separate language and culture as they belong together.”
Can I go to Brazil and speak fluent after one course with you?
After a 10 weeks course you can communicate there…call a taxi, get directions, go to a restaurant, introduce yourself , say things you like and what you don’t like…”
Do you give your students homework?
Yes, we do. Learning a language is not only being at school, you also need to spend some time at home, studying by yourself.”
Can people do official exams for Portuguese with you?
We can prepare them for the proficiency exam.”
Which do you think is more beautiful? Dutch or Portuguese?
We think any language and any kind of communication is beautiful. They are just different and when you understand and respect the difference, it’s not difficult to learn.”
What are the costs for a course?
It will depend on which course, we have groups courses, particular lessons, in company, conversation lesson…”
Where do I sign up?
You can contact us via the website: www.bvtaalcentrum.com and you will get more information.”
